How often should a business redesign its website?
Short answer
Every three to five years for most businesses — or sooner if the site is slow on mobile, cannot be edited without a developer, no longer matches how you sell, or is losing organic visibility. Continuous small improvements beat one big rebuild every five years.
Updated
Signals it's time
Mobile traffic bounces at a much higher rate than desktop, Core Web Vitals fail in Search Console, the CMS blocks routine edits, your services changed but the site did not, or competitors appear in AI answers and you do not.
Redesign without losing rankings
Keep URLs where possible, 301-redirect the ones you change, preserve the content that earns traffic, and re-implement structured data before launch — not after. Most post-redesign traffic drops are redirect and metadata mistakes, not design ones.
